Boston Municipal Court
The official title of this court is the “Central Division of the Boston Municipal Court,” but it’s referred to informally as the “BMC-Central”. This is the main court of the Boston Municipal Court, and while it is made up of 8 divisions serving areas of Brighton, Central (downtown), Charlestown, Dorchester, East Boston, Roxbury, South Boston and West Roxbury, the BMC’s primary jurisdiction is downtown Boston. Prosecutions being brought in the other seven city areas listed above (aside from BMC- Central,) are brought before those individual courts. The total number of judges that sit in all eight divisions of the BMC number about 30, and approximately 10 of these sit at the BMC Central. The types of criminal cases that may be filed in the Boston Municipal Court include most felonies and misdemeanors that don’t carry a state prison sentence, as well as felonies punishable by a maximum sentence of 5 years.

The BMC-Central has over 10 different courtrooms located on several different floors, and different judges rotate sitting in those courtrooms, depending on judicial assignments, which vary from week to week. These judges preside over anything from arraignments to bail hearing to probation violations, pre-trial conferences, suppression hearings and trials. Obviously, because its jurisdiction is the downtown area of Boston, the BMC-Central is always busy, simply because a lot of people live and/or work in Boston, and because there are many bars and nightclubs in the city, together with the Boston Garden and Fenway Park.
