Stoughton District Court

If you are arrested by police in any of the above towns, you will be arraigned in Stoughton District Court. If you have not been arrested, but instead either a person or a Police Department in any of the above towns has filed what is known as a “Criminal Complaint” against you in this court, a Clerk-Magistrate’s Hearing, (also called a Show-Cause Hearing,) will also take place at Stoughton District Court.

Usually, a small number of different judges (typically 2 or 3) rotate at Stoughton District Court, depending on judicial assignments for a particular week. There is usually one judge who handles arraignments, probation violations, and pre-trial conferences. Typically the other judges handle jury trials and civil business. Stoughton District Court also has a Clerk’s Office and Probation Department. The court handles both criminal and civil jury trials, as well as what are called “bench trials,” which are trials held before a judge, and not a jury. Stoughton District Court also sometimes handles “overflow” jury trials for other courts in Norfolk County.
